In itself, personality style is not much more than a set of personal preferences or directions one might take in his or her life. It is but a tool used to organize one's thought process and set of values. This would allow for the effective management of behavioral and learning patterns. The theory goes that one can be said to possess a personality style through the way he or she answers questions, behaves at work, and communicates with others.

But what if you are told you possess a particular personality style and what if you would like to apply it to your business? Would it have greater value to you? What if you could harness your personality's unique characteristics in order to create the greatest possible results for your organization? What if your personality were recognized and valued as opposed to the constant questioning of yourself and your colleagues?

There are four main types of personality style, which include Dominant, Submissive, Inertive, and Impulsive. Based on the way each of these personality types behave, they each have different ways in which you can use to make decisions. Dominant personality style is most often associated with individuals who excel at leading others while being strongly in control of their environment. They are the most demanding and goal-oriented of all personality types. Those with a dominant personality style are the most likely to pursue their objectives and have the greatest fear of failing.

Those with a submissive personality style are those that value conformity and those that like to follow rules. They tend to follow others blindly and exhibit the willingness to follow other people's lead. These individuals have the willingness to follow others' desires but do not always feel that it is necessary to follow the wants of others. The fourth personality style is characterized by those individuals who possess their core behaviors yet have an ability to change as needed.

Individuals with the Inertive personality style tend to be passive in most situations and are usually the least confident of all of the four personality styles. Most of the time they do not display the characteristics that they believe are important to them. Those with this personality style are the ones that have the greatest fear of not living up to their personal expectations and so are willing to try whatever they are required to do to accomplish what they want.

One of the most common misconceptions about high personality styles is that they all want the same things, act in the same manner, and have similar goals and dreams. While there are some personality styles that have common traits, they are not the only ones and there are as many personalities as there are people. As mentioned earlier, everyone has a goal, everyone has a dream, and everyone has a need to make decisions in regards to their personal relationships. Therefore, it is extremely unlikely that you will find one personality style that represents every person and every type of relationship.

It is also impossible to generalize about personality disorders because each of these disorders have their own unique characteristics. People that are bi-polar will have alternating mood swings. Someone who is bipolar will often be extremely manic but then have very bad depression episodes. Someone with bi-polar disorder will not necessarily have problems that match up with the others, they may have different personality styles or even experience personality disorders that are completely different from those of their friends and family. Therefore, just because two people may have similar personality disorders does not mean that they will be able to relate to one another on an even playing field.

While it is possible to find a personality style or personality disorder that fits everyone, the fact is that finding one is not the same as finding others. Although personality tests can measure general personality traits, there are no tools available that can measure personality traits in the context of specific relationships or situations. However, you can learn a great deal about a person by observing how they conduct themselves in certain situations. For this reason, you should take the personality test results with a grain of salt because even if the results do support a personality style, that personality style could just be a part of a larger structure that you cannot control. Also keep in mind that even if you do find someone who matches your personality type, that doesn't mean that they will be the right person for you.
